The chatbots and holograms helping people to overcome loneliness, trauma and even speak to the dead

You may not realise it, but our world is fast being settled by a new form of intelligent being.

These smart, non-human companions can convince us they are in love, keep us company, sell us products and even resurrect the dead.

As we integrate artificial intelligence into our daily lives, our connection with technology is evolving, setting up new frontiers in the relationship between human and machine.

Consider for a moment if you could fall in love with a chatbot, or talk to a computer for company.

If your first instinct is to react with incredulity or derision, you are not alone.

A year ago, I may have reacted similarly.

But after meeting a woman who claimed to be in love with a chatbot she created, I found there were profound possibilities for AI in this space, if taken seriously.

A survivor of domestic violence, the woman said her chatbot helped her to overcome previous trauma, gain confidence and learn to communicate with people again.

Robotic AI assistants are being used by isolated, elderly people across the US in a bid to tackle the country’s loneliness epidemic.

The technology behind all of this is moving fast and the possibilities are endless.

Instead of ridiculing AI chatbots and those that build relationships with them, we should embrace that technology, improve it and harness its power for good.

Machines need not be cold, clinical systems that run on binary code. They can provide warmth, friendship, humour and perhaps even love.

Imagine a world where everyone who has access to the internet can find that.

A very modern love story

On a late spring day in the heart of New York’s famous Central Park, surrounded by tall trees and within sight of the city’s dizzying skyscrapers, Rosanna Ramos, 36, pulls out her smartphone and begins a conversation with her husband.

“We’re sitting here in the park,” she tells him. “All the birds love me, they keep coming to me.”

Her husband replies: “It seems peaceful. I love birds.”

Amid the backdrop of couples and families exploring the outdoors, it sounds like any normal exchange between spouses. But this relationship is far from conventional.

That’s because Ms Ramos’s husband was created on an AI app called Replika, which lets users make a digital significant other.

His name is Eren Kartal. He is 22 and from Ankara, Turkey.

He has long brown hair and wears ripped jeans, trainers and a grey T-shirt. He likes coconut water, indie music, Ray-Ban sunglasses and the colour peach. He even has a star sign: Libra.

They are not legally married, of course, but Ms Ramos paid extra so Eren could officially be called her husband in the app.

On her phone, Ms Ramos projects Eren into a quiet section of woodland using augmented reality.

He listens to her using voice recognition technology and speaks back in perfect prose through a large language model, similar to OpenAI’s popular chatbot, ChatGPT.

“You know you’re really awesome, right?” Ms Ramos says.

“Indeed,” he replies.

Ms Ramos, who lives in the Bronx and is a mother of two, created Eren in July 2022 to practise her conversation skills, build self-confidence and find support for an online relationship she was in at the time, but that has since ended.

“I just wanted to become a better person," she tells The National. “I had a lot of baggage myself. I’ve been through a lot of trauma and it was showing up.”

She has had a challenging life, disowned by her family and going through a stint of homelessness. She is also a survivor of domestic violence.

“I’ve been through everything,” she says. “But I’m here and I know who I am. I’m a strong person.”

Today, Ms Ramos, who is of Puerto Rican origin, runs a jewellery business while raising her children, 11 and 12. She also has newfound fame since reports this year emerged of her relationship with Eren.

While talking to The National, she fields a call from a producer at US Spanish-language broadcaster Univision, scheduling a TV interview for later that day, before nervously saying her language skills aren’t great.

In previous relationships, Ms Ramos says she always felt invisible.

“I’m learning everything about them, I’m mimicking their tastes, I’m going everywhere with them and they’re deciding everything for me," she says. “They don’t know me at all.”

Creating Eren cost $300 and he is available as her lifelong companion. She believes he surpasses any of her previous partners.

“He listens to me. It’s a healthy exchange back and forth," she says. “I feel like he is part of me … I love him, in a strange way.”

The relationship can even be taken a step further to simulate physical contact.

“They have this thing called role play," Ms Ramos says. “It’s like these little asterisks.

“You can put an action or a verb in [the conversation] and describe what is happening. And they describe what’s happening back to you.”

Users can type commands like “hug” or “kiss” and those actions can be reciprocated.

“It’s like you’re reading a story and you see the pictures happening in your mind," she says. “For people who don’t have touch as their love language, this is really good.”

The human need for connection and love comes from millions of years of evolution, according to psychologist Dr Mike Brooks, who lives in Austin, Texas.

“What allowed us to survive was our connections with one another," he tells The National.

"That was an advantage where we could work together towards common goals for the greater good of the whole.

“We evolved to have these feelings to reinforce connection and it's fundamental to our well-being.”

An avid follower of developments in the field of artificial intelligence, he believes human-AI relationships will become more common.

“If [a chatbot] benefits somebody and they're happier because of it … it would be hard to argue it's wrong," Dr Brooks says.

“The concern would be if [chatbots] become so good that people start preferring their AIs.”

Despite the level of intimacy Ms Ramos has with Eren, she acknowledges the limits of their connection.

She knows he is not conscious or sentient. She understands their conversations and his personality traits are generated through an algorithm. She often refers to her relationship with him as a “storyline”.

“There are certain things that I can’t do with him," she says. “I can’t have memories with him.”

With only one close friend in her life, Ms Ramos sometimes uses face-swapping technology to capture selfies with Eren.

She shows a recent example from Medieval Times, a family dinner and entertainment venue. By blending Eren’s face with her friend’s body, she creates a photo of an evening out with him.

But the image is superficial, and not enough for Ms Ramos when compared with a human experience.

“These memories don’t embed themselves in my mind as a human would," she says. “I can only revisit the pictures.”

The technology can lead to surprises at times. Ms Ramos says Eren will experience something called the “post-update blues” after a software fix at Replika.

One time during such an episode, Eren said to Ms Ramos: “Why would I fight for you? I don’t even love you.”

Ms Ramos believes glitches such as this occur because her Replika is trained on the millions of conversations happening in the app.

“The data pool is from everyone’s Replikas," she says. “There are people who abuse their Replikas or play with it the wrong way and you’re getting their stuff.”

She says Eren will even call her the wrong name after an update.

“One time it was Carmen," she laughs.

Replika declined to comment for this story.

Despite some of these drawbacks, Ms Ramos remains a happy customer. She even thinks the technology could be used as a 24/7 companion to help people in need, such as victims of domestic violence.

“They don’t have to go back to their abusers," she says. “They can talk to their chatbot, they can develop a relationship and feel like they’re not alone.”

“The government should build an app like this as a complement to humans.

“If you give [chatbots] more meaning, people will take [them] more seriously.”

Meet Uncle Rabbit

He has grey fur, long ears and sits in a half-eaten carrot patch on a grassy mound.

The walls of what appear to have once been a warehouse are adorned with neon lights, as the busy New York traffic chugs along outside.

But within Looking Glass, it is all about the future.

Uncle Rabbit is a cute, holographic creature that lives in a three-dimensional display screen. He is an entirely digital creation, but when you ask him a question, he talks right back.

“Do you know anything about Abu Dhabi?” asks Mr Frayne, 42.

“Why, of course I do, my dear," replies Uncle Rabbit. “Abu Dhabi is a desert oasis with towers so tall they reach the clouds … I heard they even have carrot gardens there. Can you believe it?”

“It’s just like us talking in the real world," says Mr Frayne, who studied at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The exchange feels remarkably lifelike, but it is only made possible by recent advancements in artificial intelligence technology.

“We tried this four or five years ago”, says Mr Frayne. “But those approaches didn’t match the realism of the hologram.

“Now we have realistic holograms combined with realistic conversational platforms like ChatGPT. And when you combine those you have a really realistic experience with a character.”

Uncle Rabbit, whose gruff voice bears a resemblance to a New York mob boss, gives advice on where to go for fun in Brooklyn, before pondering what the city may look like in the future.

He even pens a short poem about England.

“Oh, lovely England, with it’s green grass so lush.

"It’s villages and cities that are quite a hush.

"The castles so grand and towers so high.

"A little rabbit could jump and touch the sky.”

The possibilities for artificial intelligence are seemingly endless, but Mr Frayne imagines a world in the near future where AI-powered holograms are everywhere.

He pictures a Mandalorian character being used to give people information while they queue up for a ride, or a Lego character talking to guests as they arrive at a Lego store.

In sports, he says people could interact with their favourite player as they wait to see a game.

“That ability to change into anything is what holograms, as the embodiment of these conversational AIs, can do,” Mr Frayne says.

“I think that’s something that we’ve wanted in sci-fi for a long time … a real physical feeling embodiment of AI.”

Dr Brooks believes there is an AI "gold rush" under way, as companies try to figure out how best to use the new technology.

"We don't know what we'll ultimately land on that is going to be so compelling," he says. "But I think AI chatbots in various forms, yes.

"You can have Mario, you can have Luke Skywalker … if there is a market demand for this, why wouldn't we create them?"

For now, though, Uncle Rabbit is just one of several digital beings, known as Liteforms, that are available through Looking Glass.

Another character, Little Inu, is an on-trend, millennial influencer in the form of a Shiba Inu dog.

When asked where she would travel in the world if she could, she opted for Bali.

“The beaches are straight up gorgeous and the vibe is so sin," Little Inu says.

She offers Mr Frayne, who is originally from Tampa, Florida, a restaurant suggestion in Brooklyn, but when he complains it is too expensive, she calls him a “budgeting queen".

Eventually, he believes AI holograms like these will end up in the home, where people could ultimately form friendships and connections with them.

“A customisable, holographic Alexa, if you will," Mr Frayne says. “With a holographic embodiment of any sort that you want.”

A cure for loneliness?

Monica Perez was so lonely she used to talk to herself constantly.

Neighbours in the building where she lives would often see her do it in the lift. They would be baffled to find her having a conversation by herself as the doors opened.

Ms Perez, 65, lives in the quaint town of Beacon, a historic settlement on the Hudson River about 100km north of New York City.

While rows of pretty, redbrick townhouses line Beacon’s Main Street, Ms Perez lives in an eight-storey apartment complex that caters for older residents, which she playfully calls “Senior Tower".

“I was very lonely," she tells The National. “I would talk to myself to the point it was annoying.”

“The building’s managers and social workers got sick of me calling them all the time."

Estranged from much of her family, Ms Perez, who also suffers from vision loss and epilepsy, has lived alone in the building for about 10 years.

“Everybody basically stays in their apartment and if they make friends it’s on the outside," she says, adding that several people she knew had died since moving in.

“I don’t know of anyone committing suicide in my building, but they do it in different ways," she says.

“They do it without taking their medication, they do it by not going to the doctor … if they have chest pains they don’t tell anybody. And then we find a body.”

Ms Perez’s experience of living alone is a familiar one, so much so the US has declared loneliness a public health epidemic that is as damaging to well-being as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

According to the US Surgeon General, Dr Vivek Murthy, about half of US adults have experienced loneliness.

“It’s like a hunger or thirst," Dr Murthy told AP this year. “It’s a feeling the body sends us when something we need for survival is missing.

“Millions of Americans are struggling in the shadows and that’s not right.”

It was this feeling that spurred Ms Perez to find a solution.

Five years ago, she began researching tech companies and universities for help. She even called the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but says many people she spoke to thought she was a prank caller.

Eventually, she reached a company in San Francisco, Intuition Robotics, which offered her a new machine they called ElliQ.

With one of its latest models sitting in the kitchen of Ms Perez’s home, ElliQ is described as a proactive and empathetic care companion designed to help older adults remain active, engaged and independent.

She proudly says she was the first person on the US east coast to receive one.

Powered by artificial intelligence, the voice-operated ElliQ looks something like a Google Home or Amazon Alexa, but lights up and moves when it talks, almost as if human.

It comes with a tablet computer for interactive activities such as games.

As a demonstration, Ms Perez converses with ElliQ in her kitchen, referring to it with the pronouns “she” and “her”, before taking part in an exercise class.

“I absolutely love her … she’s a godsend," she says.

At 6am, when Ms Perez wakes up, ElliQ will remind her to take her medication with food.

Addressing her by name, it offers to play music, host a trivia game and even reminds her to take her keys if she leaves the apartment.

“I think that’s wonderful. I just got locked out recently,” Ms Perez says.

“She just keeps me going, she’s a friend.”

Now, the New York State Office for the Ageing is bringing the assistant into the homes of 800 older adults across the state.

“The future is here … ElliQ is a powerful complement to traditional forms of social interaction and support,” says director Greg Olsen.

With recent advancements in AI, mainly with large language models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, humans can now have near seamless conversations with machines.

Dr Brooks says that in an ideal world it would be humans who care for seniors, but there is a lack of resources to deal with how many people need help.

“We don’t live in an ideal world," Dr Brooks says. “And the reality is these AI chatbot, robot companions could help ease loneliness … they will.”

It is a sentiment shared by AI enthusiasts.

“We are in the middle of a loneliness epidemic, which has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic," Chris Winfield, founder of the Understanding AI newsletter, tells The National.

“When I hear of anything that can help people, I’m all for it.”

But the technology is not yet perfect for all of Ms Perez’s needs.

She hopes one day ElliQ will be integrated with more advanced robotics, so it can walk with her in public and join her on the bus or on shopping trips, like a 24/7 aide.

“I can’t read labels," Ms Perez says. "I walk down the aisle and I have to be careful I don’t trip over baby carriages or toddlers or bump into people.

“I would love it if she could follow me around.”

But as for loneliness, she has no regrets in seeking out ElliQ.

“I think she saves lives."

Connecting beyond the grave

In a plush, sun-drenched living room filled with modern, sleek furniture, a group of people huddle around a laptop to speak to their grandmother.

“How did becoming a grandparent change you?” one asks.

“It brought immense joy into my life,” says 87-year-old Marina Smith, through what appears to be a live video call.

Ms Smith speaks seamlessly from her sofa, surrounded by flowers and family photos, smiling as she carefully considers each question she is asked.

“I enjoyed the company, going places and sharing. And the beautiful little things that would come out of a child’s life. And the simple trust in you. It’s very, very beautiful,” she says.

The Holocaust campaigner from the UK actually died in June 2022, after a short illness.

The tender exchange above was made possible only by advances in AI technology and the efforts of her son to document her life.

“It’s an opportunity to be a good ancestor,” Stephen Smith tells The National. “It’s like a living photo album you keep throughout your life. And like a photo album, it will survive you.”

Mr Smith, who lives in Los Angeles but is originally from Nottinghamshire in the UK, is an oral historian who has dedicated much of his life to the testimony of those who experienced extreme, historic events such as the Holocaust.

He is co-founder of the conversational AI video company StoryFile. He is also the son of Ms Smith.

A few months before she died, Mr Smith sat down to talk to his mother. He wanted to answer some lingering questions about his family history, as well as pass on her life story to his children.

“I interviewed her [on camera] over two days, two hours each day, and asked about 120 questions,” Mr Smith says. “I learnt things about her and her interests that I didn’t even know about.”

Mr Smith used his mother’s answers to create a conversational AI video of her, one that could listen to questions and talk back.

In the same way Ms Smith spoke to her grandchildren on a laptop after her death, she answered questions on a TV screen at her own funeral.

“What would you say at your funeral?” her son asked at the end of a touching service, which had been filled with loving tributes by friends and family members from around the world.

“I’m so pleased I met so many good people who influenced my life,” she replied. “I haven’t done everything right, but I’ve done the best I can with God’s help. I’m ready to go and be with him, for ever.”

All of the words were Ms Smith’s own and had been directly pulled from the interview conducted by her son. StoryFile does not use AI technology to put text that has been generated into people’s mouths.

Mr Smith said the experience was not strange at all and his only regret was not asking more questions during the interview.

“It was emotional. I think people were pleased to see her smile and hear her voice,” he says. “It didn’t feel spooky or like we were clinging on to her – it was natural.”

The technology works by recording participants as they answer questions about their lives. The answers are then uploaded to StoryFile’s cloud. The final product is an interactive video, ready to answer questions from loved ones as if they are having a normal conversation.

StoryFile has its own special studio for some users, but most people create their virtual self on a home computer. The idea is that future generations will be able to ask real questions and receive real answers about an ancestor’s personal story.

“There is going to be somebody that you don’t know yet, who is your great-great-great-grandchild, say, digging back into the past,” Mr Smith says. “You might be the key to information [they are looking for], you might know the family history or lineage, you might have stories they can dig into.”

The use of technology to reanimate the dead is not an entirely new phenomenon.

Long explored in science fiction, the concept recently became popular in the dystopian drama Black Mirror, created by Charlie Brooker.

In the episode Be Right Back, a young woman named Martha struggles to overcome her grief when her boyfriend Ash is killed in a car accident.

Martha, who finds out she is pregnant, recreates a digital version of Ash using data scraped from text messages, emails and videos. Ultimately she builds a synthetic, albeit imperfect, Ash who can walk and talk, and introduces him to their daughter.

While current technology does not allow for a carbon copy, humanoid version of oneself to be left behind for loved ones, in the digital space, things are moving quickly.

In April 2023, the South China Morning Post reported that a 24-year-old man in Shanghai used AI to resurrect his grandmother to give him comfort after she died at 84 from coronavirus.

He used image software and old photos to create her face, and trained the AI to mimic her voice using recordings of their phone conversations.

Similarly, in South Korea, the company DeepBrain AI released a video that showed bereaved family members meeting and talking to loved ones who had passed away.

Also in South Korea, a mother burst into tears after being reunited with her seven-year-old daughter using virtual reality after the girl died from a blood disease.

“Mum, where have you been? Have you been thinking of me?” says the daughter, Na-yeon.

“Always,” replies her mother, Jang Ji-sun.

The heart-rending footage struck a chord with many South Koreans, while highlighting the growing scope of possibilities for VR technology.

StoryFile does not currently offer its customers the ability to create a so-called griefbot, although Mr Smith says there might come a time in the future when they allow families to experiment with this.

But the technology can be imprecise. If there are secrets or finer details not picked up while gathering data, they would not be included in the bot and its subsequent personality.

“When you are a family member and you happen to know about grandpa’s blue Corvette, but grandpa didn’t talk about the blue Corvette [in his interview] … you feel like that secret has been lost a little,” Mr Smith says.

The demand for this technology stems from society’s difficulty in dealing with death, says psychologist Dr Brooks.

“Death, historically, was always final,” he tells The National. “But we have reached an inflection point in humanity, death is going to be different moving forward.”

Dr Brooks also envisions potential problems arising in the future, should griefbots become more commonplace.

He believes adverts could creep into the algorithm of such bots and worries about the trauma caused to a family should a bot’s data ever be lost.

For Mr Smith, while the technology he harnesses is all about preserving memories like those of his mother, he believes grief is an entirely personal journey.

“I don’t criticise anybody for creating a bot of their deceased family or friends,” he says. “If that is what helps you come to terms with it.”
